May
So, when we bought our home 3 years ago, we knew we
wanted a Boxer. We found Rudy and got her at 10 weeks
of age. She has been the perfect Boxer, and is more of an
old soul. We always say, she is Reese reincarnated,
because of all the characteristics and personality
similarities.
Hiya! My name is May Heckman and I live in S.W. Ohio
with my husband of 20 years, our college bound daughter
Amanda, our twin boys Michael and Matthew, and our fur
kids Tigger a.k.a. Fat Cat who is a 3 yr old rescue from the
Humane Society in Dayton, and our 2-year-old Boxer girl
Rudy, who’s namesake is because of Notre Dame Fighting
Irish GO IRISH!!
I’m a volunteer with MN Boxer Rescue, and Boxer rescue is
a cause very near and dear to my heart. I can imagine you
are sitting there wondering what could I possibly do for MN
Boxer Rescue, when I live in Ohio? And that is a great
question!
I keep all the records up to date, process all the applications
for adoption and volunteering, conduct all of the reference
checks, and also assist the Adoption Coordinator with
providing the foster homes the applicants information, as
well as providing information about the Boxers in our
rescue that they have expressed an interest in. At least from
Ohio, I won’t become a foster flunkie :o)
In addition to rescue work, I’m a stay at home mom, as well
as a Legal Transcriptionist. So, I’m able to work from home.
My interests include digi-scrapbooking, reading, music,
movies, hanging out with my family and my faith is also a
very important element in my life. Animals have always
been in my life, as I was a vet tech as well as volunteered at
a local nature center and tended to the farm animals. I was
also a member of FFA in high school. I would take in any
sick, injured or homeless animal, and that is where my
husband keeps me in check.
How did we come to love the Boxer breed you ask? Another
very good question: My best friend Rhonda moved here
from Indiana when her husband was stationed at Wright
Patterson Air Force Base. She was pregnant with her twin
girls, and joined the local Twins Club, that I was V.P. of.,
and she became my “little sister” in the club. We
immediately bonded as great friends, and she had a Boxer
named Reese.
I will never forget the first time
when my then 18-month-old
boys met Reese for the first
time. They screamed at the top
of their lungs and clung to my
legs.
Reese just stood there and cocked her head looking at them
like they were nuts! Well, needless to say, Reese easily won
them over, as well as my husband. It didn’t take me anytime
nor Amanda and we were hooked. So anytime Rhonda’s
family went on vacation Reese stayed with us, and soon was
an honorary family member. She went to the bridge at the
ripe old age of 13. We were blessed to know her for 8
beautiful years.
In September of 2007 we also brought Hannah into our home. She was a 4-month-old
girl that a breeder could no longer keep. From day one we had some aggression
issues, which then turned into severe aggression. We used behaviorist, trainers,
checked medically etc. Trying to stop the aggressive behavior. In April she
unprovokingly attempted to attack our 10 yr old neighbor boy, but she was on leash,
and was unable to get to him. But had she not been on leash, he would have been
seriously injured. A week later she bit our daughter. So, we knew deep down the best
thing for Hannah and her mind would be to put her to sleep, which we did May 2,
2008. She went to the bridge peacefully and was fully surrounded in love by our
children and myself, and our wonderful vet. We knew her mind wasn’t right, and she
was on guard 24/7 and that was just not normal. She will be forever in our hearts.
I love being a volunteer for MN Boxer Rescue. All of the volunteers are dedicated to
rescuing and finding displaced Boxers their forever homes.
